The City

Wellington is an exciting, vibrant capital city with an enormous number of events to tempt visitors throughout the year.  It’s also a delightfully compact place, and most major attractions are nestled within a 2 km radius of its centre.

Driving and navigating your way through its “bus only” lanes and one-way streets can be daunting for the first-time visitor, so we recommend taking one of the frequent commuter trains which depart from Paraparaumu station, 2 minutes walk from Elliotts.

The trip takes just over 50 minutes and as the rail line is elevated above the road, so you can sit back and absorb the fabulous sea views of Kapiti Island, Porirua’s twin harbours, and Wellington Harbour without having to worry about traffic.

If you’re planning on taking in a sports event or concert at Westpac Trust Stadium, there’s a pedestrian ramp which leads from Wellington Railway station directly to the stadium gates.

The beautiful waterfront area is easily accessed from the railway station, and you can walk to Te Papa (the National Museum of New Zealand) by following the harbour’s edge, or take a bus from the station.

Te Papa is one of Wellington’s top attractions, and you can spend hours on the first floor alone, taking in interactive natural history displays on everything from earthquakes to the giant squid.

Entry to the museum is free, although visiting exhibitions may attract an entry charge. Wherever you go in the building the enthusiastic staff in their distinctive “thumb print” uniforms are ready to help with directions and questions.

A stone’s throw away from Te Papa is Courtenay Place, with its plethora of eateries and restaurants to tempt your taste buds, and the walk back through the city from here provides plenty of opportunities for some serious retail therapy. The Museum of City and Sea also sits on the waterfront area and provides a unique look at the city’s connection with the sea through the decades.

Turning towards the hills, Lambton Quay is the entry point for the Cable Car. This is an excellent way of enjoying a bird’s eye view of the city for pedestrians, providing a smooth ride up past Victoria University to the top of the extensive Botanical Gardens.

After your big day out in the city, it’s a pleasure to return to Elliotts on the Kapiti Coast. Relax, plan tomorrow’s activities, soak in your spa bath or just enjoy some peace and quiet in the courtyard garden here.
