Southward's Car Museum

Not only petrol-heads but anyone with the vaguest interest in “things on wheels” will enjoy this.

Just two minutes drive to the north of Elliotts, Southwards is the largest vintage vehicle museum in the Southern Hemisphere, and sports a huge range of cars from every decade since the beginning of the automotive industry.

For a very reasonable entry fee, you can spend the entire day here feasting your eyes on an almost bewildering range of beautifully restored and lovingly polished vehicles.

And when you’ve seen more cars than you can possibly remember, there are the iconic racing cars, fire engines, motorcycles and even aircraft to look at.

Once you’ve had your fill of gazing, you can rest your tired feet and refuel at the café and restaurant on the first floor. Or take a look at the merchandising shop. Or stroll around the beautifully laid-out bush walk which skirts a small lake in the lovely grounds.

This wonderful facility exists today thanks to the vision of the late Sir Len Southward, who established a trust in the 1970’s to preserve his large and varied vehicle collection for posterity. Built in 1979, the museum also houses a 474-seat theatre with a vintage Wurlitzer organ, and a large conference centre.

Southwards is open from 9 a.m. to 4.30 or 5.00 p.m. every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday.
