- A top Wellington Regional Attraction
A nature reserve of international significance, Kapiti Island is home to many of New Zealand’s most endangered and unique bird species. Considered the “jewel in the crown of New Zealand’s conservation estate”, this predator-free paradise is one of the Wellington Region’s top visitor attractions.
The island has been managed by the New Zealand Government for over a hundred years to protect its flora and fauna. Its pristine native forest nurtures the world’s largest population of little spotted kiwi, along with kaka, takahe, saddleback, stitchbird and many others.
Some of the more sociable breeds of bird are so relaxed about their human visitors that the most difficult part of your trip could be guarding your lunch – our guests often return to the motel talking about the birds that sat on their shoulders and tried to eat their sandwiches! There are many different offerings available to the visitor, from unguided day trips to overnight stays which include nocturnal kiwi spotting trips and guided tours. Day visits to the island require a Department of Conservation permit as numbers are limited to protect the environment. Permits can be booked on-line. Overnight stays do not require a permit as they are operated from the Maori-owned land at the end of the island.
The Kapiti Island ferry departs from the Paraparaumu Beach area, 5 kms to the west of Elliotts. Parking is available at the boat departure point, or we can provide transport by arrangement if you would prefer to leave your car here during your visit.
