Imagine teeing off on the course that “tamed the Tiger”… just four minutes’ drive to the west of Elliotts is the famous Paraparaumu Beach Links Golf Course, where Tiger Woods played in 2002.
Regarded by many as one of the greatest links courses in the southern hemisphere, it has the unique claim to having hosted the New Zealand Open Championship no less than 12 times in its history.
Whether you’re a veteran or novice, you’ll enjoy the challenge of this acclaimed lay-out. Four sets of tees ensure you can set your own individual skill test. The par three holes will provide a good test of your straight hitting and correct clubbing skills due to the steep (and deep!) hollows which surround some of the greens.
Of the longer holes, the 13 th is a classic with its roller coaster fairway and green set atop a large sandhill, while the split fairway on the 17th makes for a challenging decision – do you take the safer high road shot, or risk the shorter route across bunkers?
Every hole has its own personality and many are named, albeit unofficially, after famous golfers who were beaten by the hole. However despite its formidable reputation, the course is not just for the serious-minded – if you’re a social golfer you can’t help but enjoy its beauty and challenge, and sensible play with good iron shots should provide you with a satisfying reward.
You are always welcome at the clubhouse after your game for a small something to celebrate your success (or drown your sorrows) with your companion golfers, and the on-site shop is definitely worth a browse with its wide range of high quality golf gear.
